KITTEN CARE

  1. Initial vaccination before 8 weeks requires two booster vaccinations to adequately protect your kitten. After 8 weeks your kitten will require 1 booster.
  2. Feline vaccinations include Feline Distemper, Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Pneumonitis series. A booster should be given one year after the initial series, and once every three years after that.
  3. Rabies vaccination is required. The first rabies vaccination is good for one year then it is boostered and can be done every three years.
  4. Oral medications for worms are recommended. After your kitten is dewormed you may see worms looking like spaghetti in the stools during the next 24-48 hours. No diarrhea or vomiting should occur as a result of this medication.
  5. Tapeworms require a specific type medication. Inform us if you see small, white segments (rice) in the stools of your kitten. There is no test to detect tapeworms-you must find the segments.
  6. The first injection for Feline Leukemia is given at your first or second visit. Booster Injections are given 3 weeks later and then once each year. We highly recommend the leukemia vaccinations. We know that the leukemia virus is in the same family as the aids virus affecting people and there is no cure.
  7. Feed only high quality cat food. These foods are the most nutritionally balanced foods that are available today. Stool volume and odor will be greatly decreased. Feed only dry food. Change water daily. Food may be moistened with water until three months of age.
  8. We recommend giving your kitten a bath every two weeks to aid in flea control; and to remove various chemicals that accumulate on the cat's hair from carpets, furniture, etc. which can contribute to liver disease. Start young and the kitten will learn to accept it well.
  9. Other over-the-counter shampoos can be toxic to your kitten make sure you are using a pet shampoo.
  10. Daily brushing will aid shedding and help prevent hairballs.
  11. We can spay & neuter after the initial vaccinations are complete.
