Bovine Wellness
Healthy Herd Management Program
Fall
Weaned calves
- Check for horns and testicles; dehorning and castrating should be performed by a veterinarian.
- Vaccinate with 4 way (modified live vaccine) and 8 way.
- We recommend Bovishield 4 or Resvac4/Somubac and Ultrachoice 8.
- Vitamins A & D and Vitamin E & selenium (Dystosel DS).
- Ivomec or Dectomax Pour-on (internal & external parasite control).
Bred heifers/cows
- cows & replacement heifers should be checked for pregnancy by a veterinarian.
- Vaccinate with 4 way (killed vaccine) and a scour vaccine.
- We recommend Cattlemaster 4 and Ecostar 2RC or Scourguard.
- Vitamins A & D and Vitamin E & selenium.
- Ivomec or Dectomax Pour-on (internal & external parasite control).
Bulls
- Vaccinate with 4 way (modified live vaccine).
- We recommend Bovishield 4 or Resvac4/Somubac.
- Vitamins A & D and Vitamin E & selenium (Dystosel DS).
- Ivomec or Dectomax Pour-on (internal & external parasite control).
Winter/ Early Spring (one month prior to calving)
Booster scour vaccine in bred heifers and cows.
Ensure you have the following on hand for calving season:
- Liquamycin LA
- Trivetrin
- Oxytocin
- Castrating bands
- CCIA ear tags
- Calf feeding bag & tube
- Calf feeding nipple & bottle
- Iodine scrub & solution
- OB sleeves
- Various sizes of needles & syringes
- Vitamins A & D and Vitamin E & selenium (Dystosel DS)
- Calf-Lyte electrolyte solution
- Frozen or commercial colostrum
- OB chains, handles and calf puller (jack)
Newborn calves should have navel dipped in iodine solution, ear tagged, given the appropriate dose of vitamin A & D and vitamin E & selenium and castration bands should be placed on the scrotum of bull calves.
Spring (after calving and before turning out with bulls)
Non-pregnant heifers/cows (recently calved)
- Vaccinate with 4 way (modified live vaccine) and 8 way.
- We recommend Bovishield FP 4 + L5 and Ultrachoice 8.
Calves (> 4weeks old)
- Vaccinate with 4 way (modified live vaccine) and 8 way.
- We recommend Bovishield 4 or Resvac4/Somubac and Ultrachoice 8.
Bulls (should be semen tested prior to breeding)
- Vaccinate with 4 way (modified live vaccine) and 8 way.
- We recommend Bovishield 4 or Resvac4/Somubac and Ultrachoice 8.
Vaccinate herd 2 weeks prior to breeding season.
